Faculty, Instructor and Fellowship positions beginning 2012

Applications for the Schramm Fellowship will be read during the first week of December to schedule interviews in mid December, so it is especially important that these are fully complete by December 1, including all letters of recommendation.

Assistant Professor and Higher

Positions are available in Pure and Applied Mathematics, Statistics and Applied Probability at the level of Assistant Professor or higher. Appointments are based primarily on exceptional research qualifications. Appointees will be expected to fulfill teaching duties and pursue their own research program. Position begins September 2012. PhD required by employment start date.

C.L.E. Moore Instructor (in Pure Mathematics)
Instructor (in Applied Mathematics or Statistics)

These positions are open to mathematicians who show definite promise in research. Applicants with PhDs after January 2011 are strongly preferred. Appointees will be expected to fulfill teaching duties and pursue their own research program. Position begins September 2012.

The CLE Moore Instructor position is a full-time three year position. The position normally carries a teaching load of four standard recitations each academic year. A standard recitation meets twice weekly for one hour. Depending on the Department's teaching needs, Instructors may teach a course counting as two recitations.

Instructors may take a one year unpaid leave of absence during the three year term of the Moore appointment. However, the appointment may not be extended beyond the original three year term.

American citizens and permanent residents are eligible (and encouraged) to apply for an NSF postdoctoral fellowship. The Moore Instructor position may be combined with an NSF Postdoctoral Fellowship in several ways. Two possibilities are:

  • spreading one year of the NSF fellowship over a two year period by combining it with a half-time appointment as a Moore Instructor. In these years the teaching load is reduced to 3 standard recitations in the first year and 2 standard recitations in the second year.
  • taking the second year of the NSF fellowship at MIT after the Moore instructor appointment ends

The Applied Mathematics Instructor position is a full-time two year position. The position normally carries a teaching load of four standard recitations each academic year. Instructors may take a one year unpaid leave of absence during the two year term of the Applied Math Instructor appointment. However, the appointment may not be extended beyond the original two year term.

Schramm Postdoctoral Fellowship

This three-year position is open to promising mathematicians who do research in probability or discrete mathematics, broadly interpreted. Appointees will spend the first academic year (July 1, 2012 to June 30, 2013) at the Microsoft Research New England office in Cambridge (next to the MIT campus) pursuing mathematical research in their field of study. The following two years (summer 2013 through summer 2015) will be spent at MIT, with approximately one day per week at Microsoft Research. During the years at MIT, appointees will be expected to fulfill teaching duties and pursue their own research program. Applicants must have a received a PhD no earlier than 2009, and recent PhDs may be preferred. Applications will be evaluated by both MIT faculty and Microsoft Research employees in the first week of December and finalists will be invited to visit Cambridge to interview in mid December, with expenses paid. Applicants may indicate an interest in being considered for the Schramm Postdoctoral Fellowship in their application for the Instructorship position.

Simons Postdoctoral Fellowship

This position is a three-year postdoctoral fellowship supported by the Simons Foundation. This fellowship carries a reduced teaching load of one class per year. The position is open to candidates who show definite promise in research who have received their PhD after January 2011. Fellows will be expected to pursue their own research program. Position begins September 2012. Applicants for Instructor positions will automatically be considered for the Simons Postdoctoral Fellowship.
