To prospective students, Spring 08, 18.443, Statistics for Applications: This is the course website. The text for the course will be J. Rice, Mathematical Statistics and Data Analysis, 3d edition, covering roughly the second half of the book. The class will meet MWF 10-11 in 4-370. There will be 10 problem sets and no final exam. Whether to have two or three exams during the term will be decided by class vote at the second class. More files will be posted as we go along. Prerequisite is 18.440 probability or the equivalent, where "equivalent" is interpreted fairly liberally. You need to know some probability, for example, about binomial, geometric, Poisson, and (univariate) normal distributions, expectations, variances, and (I hope) about covariances, although these will be recalled when needed. Course websites for this course in previous semesters are no longer accessible. Anyhow, the course will be pretty different from last fall's version which was taught from a different textbook.
