Text: "Linear representations of finite groups" (Part I and II) by J.-P. Serre, GTM #42.

Lecturer: George Lusztig

Office: room 2-276.

Grader: Scott Kovach

There will be homework (about five problem sets).

Final grade will come from: lecturing/attendance 60%; homework 20%; final paper 20%. There will be no exams.

With a few exceptions, lectures in this course will be presented by students on material they learn from the textbook. You will be assigned your material to lecture on about one week in advance. Two students will give lectures each class, with a short intermission in between. Attendance is a part of your final grade. You will practice giving one of your lectures to me before giving them to the rest of the class.

There will be one major writing project. This is an expository paper, written in some form of TEX, of 10 pages which will overview a topic related to the course. Here are some choices of topic. You should choose a topic and inform me of your choice by November 5. You will submit it twice (at least); one preliminary and one final submission. You should submit to me the first draft of your paper by November 19 and the second draft by December 3. The final version of your paper is due on December 8.
