Norbert Wiener Professor of Mathematics
James McKernan joined the MIT mathematics faculty as professor in 2007, following faculty appointments at UCSB since 1995. He received the B.A. from Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1985, and the Ph.D. from Harvard in 1991, under the direction of Joseph Harris. He was subsequently appointed an instructor at the University of Utah and the University of Texas. He was a Visiting Assistant Professorship at the Oklahoma State University from 1994-95. Professor McKernan's research interests are in algebraic geometry.
Professor McKernan is currently the Norbert Wiener Professor of Mathematics (2009). He received the Clay Mathematics Research Award in 2007. With Christopher Hacon, he was awarded the Frank Nelson Cole Prize in Algebra by the AMS in 2009. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society (2011).
