The purpose of this study is to improve the representation of intense mixing associated with dense overflows in the ocean. A variety of methodological approaches to the study of these violent mixing events is being undertaken. Specifically, we are approaching this problem along three complementary research axes: theoretical considerations based on conservation laws, numerical simulations using ocean general circulation models, and rotating fluid experiments in a physical laboratory.
