Gallery: Random Packings
One of the largest successes of the Spot Model has been as a method of accurately recreating flowing random packings of spheres. In the future, we plan to study this in much more detail.
The above image shows an ensemble of five columnar granular packings generated by DEM simulation. The packings are ten particle diameters across and approximately 45 particle diameters high. We make use of periodic boundary conditions in the x and y directions to eliminate wall effects.
We are interested in seeing how the microscopic packing statistics, such as the radial distribution function and the bond angle distribution, alter when spots are passed through the system. In particular, we are interested in seeing how much we can compact the packings by diffusing spots upwards.
