Department Computing News

projectorInstructions on using lcd projectors are now available.

magma Magma, a Computational Algebra System is now available. For more information see the Magma website

R14 Matlab 7 (also known as Release 14) has been installed.

This release includes new programming tools, support for integer and single-precision math, the ability to work with larger data sets, and performance enhancements.

mathematica Mathematica 5 has been installed on both Linux and Solaris machines. One of the main new features is a considerable increase in performance of numeric calculations. More information on this and other changes between Mathematica 4 and 5 can be found at the following web site:

maple10 Maple 10 has been installed. You can access it by typing maple for the command line interface or xmaple for the gui. Some of the things that are new are described here:

Maple 10 New Features

virus Email is now scanned for Viruses with McAfee VirusScan. If a virus is found the email containing the virus is discarded.

SSH We've posted a new FAQ page on using SSH. SSH is our secure replacement for telnet, but did you know it can also be used to transfer files? If you're a new user of SSH, or if you've been using SSH only for remote terminal access and want to learn about SSH's other uses, you can find the page here.

SpamAssassin SpamAssassin a spam filtering program is now installed on our mail server. For more information please see the SpamAssassin page.


Tip of the Week

Kile! Try Kile! Kile is an open-source user friendly TeX/LaTeX editor. To start Kile, click on Red Hat menu and select MIT Math Department Applications, Text Editors, Kile. You may be interested in the guide to getting started.
