Position Overview:

RESEARCH SCIENTIST, Mathematics (two positions), to develop the Magma computer algebra system under a grant from the Simons Foundation. These positions are based at MIT under the direction of principal investigator Andrew Sutherland and are part of a collaboration between MIT and the University of Sydney (PI John Voight). Will be engaged in a combination of software development research and mathematical research.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions**):

Responsibilities include designing and implementing algorithms in arithmetic geometry, number theory, group theory, representation theory, commutative algebra, and algebraic geometry, and facilitating their integration into Magma; publication of research papers devoted to the theory and analysis of these algorithms; coordinating with researchers across multiple institutions working on computational aspects of these fields; compiling mathematical data sets relevant to research in these areas and integrating them into Magma; and participating in and supporting workshops and meetings.

Qualifications & Skills:

Job Requirements: REQUIRED: Ph.D. in mathematics with a research background in the computational aspects of arithmetic geometry, number theory, group theory, representation theory, commutative algebra, or algebraic geometry, and experience in the design, analysis, and implementation of algorithms in one or more of these fields (preferably more than one). Programming experience in Magma, including package development, and fluency in C/C++ required.

Must be able to travel and present research results.

The start date is September 1, 2024 (negotiable), with an anticipated end date of August 31, 2029 and the possibility for renewal. Hiring for this position and any renewal is contingent upon funding.

Job Description:

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (IT) GENERALIST 1, Mathematics, to analyze and resolve departmental IT hardware, software, network, and/or security issues for end-users running a wide range of operating systems. Responsibilities will include providing infrastructure support, maintenance, and operations for IT systems, hardware, and software; installing, configuring, and updating hardware, software, and networks; responding to, tracking, and documenting technical issues received via helpdesk, phone calls, and/or walk-in traffic; providing a high standard of customer service; creating accounts and configuring software/hardware as part of the onboarding process; resolving audiovisual equipment issues; training end-users on software and equipment; participating on the department’s IT Oversight Committee; creating/maintaining knowledge base articles for common help desk issues; monitoring and communicating system status to management; running reports; creating and maintaining technical documentation; ensuring accurate inventory records; collaborating on upgrade planning and budgeting; backing up consulting systems coordinators; helping administer the Applied Mathematics Computational Laboratory, including servers running Fedora and parallel computational technologies; and supporting a Linux cluster and computational servers.

Job Requirements:

REQUIRED: high school diploma or its equivalent; three years’ experience supporting hybrid Windows and Macintosh environments; advanced-level knowledge of IT standards/policies; customer service focus; ability to address a broad spectrum of user's computer needs; experience with UNIX/Linux, maintaining servers and end-user workstations, HTML, and a LAMP environment; experience supporting Mac OSx and Windows; and participation in training to keep up with the position’s evolving demands.
